Stolon Studio have designed a new roof-top home, as part of the retrofit and refurbishment of an existing Victorian Warehouse. This small addition will not only create a single new home, but it is also done without any demolition, waste or building over yet more land. Utilising roof space, where suitable, can help to deliver new homes where people want to live – in and amongst existing communities.
In 2016 Stolon carried out a detailed study into potential housing delivery from Small Sites. Whilst incremental, it’s estimated that small sites can deliver 23% of the current housing target.
Called ‘Head in the Clouds’, this low maintenance new home creates a light filled space with distant views over the tops of gardens. It utilises recycled materials and lightweight construction – topped with solar PV and ASHP (but of course!). Rain planters, green roofs, and habitat boxes increase the opportunity for biodiversity (1000% BNG).
