Working as part of a team is always rewarding, and this project is no different.  Led by local contractor, Hale, construction work commenced in midsummer on this steep sloping chalk site.

Taking into consideration it’s Arts and Craft neighbourhood, Stolon Studio have designed a new build complement which utilises modern and traditional craftmanship.  Detailed with bespoke handmade, long-format bricks, and matching long-format roof tiles, the new house is a contemporary realisation of the movement’s proclivity towards understated, everyday materials and dismissal of overly ornate decoration.  It is tied together with a tactile, restrained material palette.

At the heart of this crafted home, is the need for the house to be accessible and inclusive, without being overtly so.  Studies show that using design to lessen the impacts of old age, significantly improves the quality of life for everyone affected.  And that’s why we have included joinery, with seamlessly integrated handrails; and selected contrasting walls, floors and lighting to enhance 3D navigation.

Using the latest innovations such as high-performance triple-glazed windows and solar protection to minimise heat loss and over-heating, the house will also run with ASHP, MVHR and solar PV.  It’s certainly a home which embraces the challenges of the future.
